About US

In general, the mission and role of the Charlotte Alumni Chapter is to serve, to involve, and to inform by connecting Smithites to JCSU and to each other. Goals include the following:

  1. Foster, cultivate, and maintain a spirit of loyalty and cooperation among alumni toward JCSU
  2. Develop comradery and fellowship among JCSU alumni and friends of the University
  3. Provide financial support for JCSU students, programs, and facilities
  4. Encourage alumni contributions to the University
  5. Recruit, engage, and retain financial membership for the Alumni Chapter
  6. Provide financial support for the Charlotte Chapter Endowed Scholarship Fund
  7. Involve more Young Alumni in chapter activities

There are over 1800 Smith alumni in the Charlotte area, which presents enormous opportunities for us to recruit human and financial resources to support the Chapter, its programs, and the University. This also offers unique opportunities for fellowship, social activities, networking, and community-University involvement. The Charlotte Chapter has promoted fellowship by sponsoring bus trips to JCSU football (Virginia State on 9/28/13) and basketball (Elizabeth City on 1/11/14) games, sponsored a successful bus Casino Trip (Cherokee NC on 8/10/13), sponsored a Meet & Greet (Open House at Mosaic Village on 8/22/13) to spark local chapter involvement and new memberships, sponsored a Holiday Social event (12/11/13), and sponsored a group private “Mandela” movie showing (1/5/14). The Chapter encourages collaboratively efforts among other University alumni groups and organizations, as well as with friends of the University. We have targeted a financial membership of at least 300 (currently at 86). Membership dues are $75 per year ($50 for the local chapter and $25 for National).

The Charlotte Chapter has continued to fund the Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides funds annually for freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior students from the Charlotte area. The fund provides a minimum cash award of $1000 per semester per recipient for a total distribution of $8,000 per academic year for all four recipients. The Chapter has previously sponsored three Smart Classrooms ($45,000) on campus.

Current fundraising activities include a “Gold and Blue Ball” scheduled for February 1, 2014 at the Charlotte Trolley Museum and “Running of the Bulls” 5K Run/3K Walk, starting and ending on the Smith campus, scheduled for 4/26/14.

Charlotte area alumni can expect more fellowship gatherings, more fundraising activities toward signature annual events, more events catered for Young Alumni involvement, and a major membership drive.
