The Running of the Bulls

On Saturday, September 13, 2014, the Charlotte Alumni Chapter of Johnson C. Smith University will launch the “Running of the Bulls”, a 5K Run/3K Walk event, designed to be a signature annual fundraiser for the chapter. The event will bring together local alumni, JCSU students and the Charlotte community for a morning of “fun and fitness for a cause”. Funds raised from the event will be primarily used to increase the chapter’s annual giving to the University, particularly, for its endowed scholarship fund, university programs and special initiatives. Currently, the chapter annually funds four Charlotte area undergraduate students.

The “Running of the Bulls” run/walk will be held in the morning to attract not only running enthusiasts but first-time walkers and individuals interested in enhancing their physical health. Running participants will depart from Summit Street to and from the JCSU stadium and follow a route inclusive of 5-points, Rozzelles Ferrry Road, W. Trade and Dixon Streets. Walking participants will follow a route on campus grounds.

The Charlotte chapter has targeted a goal of 400 paid adult entrants for this event. We believe that with the large number of local alumni, the participation of Charlotte’s running enthusiasts, and the support of friends, family and co-workers of JCSU alumni; the “Running of the Bulls” will be a huge success. Registration fees will vary based upon adult, child, team, and JCSU student entrants. Additionally, there will be a runner’s village that includes such features as healthcare vendors, healthy snacks (free and for purchase); fun activities for children (ages 3-10 years); and movement activities for adults.

While there are numerous walk/race events in the Charlotte area, very few have been orchestrated for the West Side of Charlotte. The Charlotte Chapter of JCSU Alumni intends to be the premier group for conducting a road race/walk event in this part of the city. Moreover, we believe that the name of our event embodies instant name recognition and marketing potential because it is suggestive of the famous “running with the bulls” in Spain. However, there will be no 4-legged bulls in this event! Our efforts also are in line with the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative as well as with health care professionals’ concern about the disproportionate health challenges in our community related to obesity, diabetes, asthma, stroke, and hypertension.

The “Running of the Bulls” welcomes the support of business, corporate, and community sponsorship and partnerships. Obvious costs associated with the event, e.g., awards, tee shirts, refreshments, signage will minimize our potential fundraising if such additional financial support is not secured. Hence, there are several sponsorship levels as well as other opportunities for businesses/groups to provide in-kind support. A separate registration form is available for community/nonprofit groups or small businesses to donate and register their members/employees. The deadline for sponsorship’s is August 1, 2014.

The Charlotte Chapter is excited about offering this event to the community. We ask that you join us on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. for the first annual “Running of the Bulls” where you will have fun and fitness for a cause.

The deadline for Early Registration for general participants/teams is August 12, 2014 which guarantees entrants a tee-shirt on event day. Late registration fees will apply as well as a higher rate for event-day registration.
