Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 13, 2016) – Longtime Johnson C. Smith University men’s basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. was honored by the Charlotte City Council for achieving 500 career coaching wins during the most recent city council meeting on Monday evening at the Charlotte Government Center.

Joined by the JCSU men’s basketball team, JCSU President Dr. Ronald L. Carter and CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams, Joyner accepted the award from Mayor Jennifer Roberts and members of the Charlotte City Council.

“I am humbled and grateful to receive this award from our city’s leaders,” said Joyner, who stands as the winningest active head coach in the CIAA. “To be recognized in this manner by our elected officials is a great honor.”

Joyner gained his 500th career win at the helm of the JCSU men’s program in a 104-88 win over Apprentice on Nov. 20.

Joyner is one of only five head coaches in North Carolina with 500 wins, and along withDuke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Davidson’s Bob McKillop, is one of only three who have reached the milestone at one school.

North Carolina’s Roy Williams and Western Carolina’s Larry Hunter are the other two coaches with 500 wins.
